Mabuhay, welcome to paradise. The Philippines are a nation made up of more than 7,000 islands. It is part of the East Indies, a vast island group lying South and East of Mainland Asia, with Taiwan at the North Coast and Borneo in the south.
The three main island Groups are Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Situated on the crossroads of Asia, the Philippines were discovered by the West when Ferdinand Magellan landed 1521 in Cebu. Until the end of the 19th century the Spanish ruled the Philippines. The Americans broke the Spaniards grip on the Philippines and the second period of colonization began. The Philippines education system, their legal system and the style of government still reflect the influence of the Americans. Another relic from the American past is the "Jeepney" the main transportation vehicle that is famous for its colorful and individual decoration.
Halo-Halo is a Filipino word that means mixture. While it describes a popular desert, it could also describe the Filipino. They look like Asians, write and speak English like Americans, worship like Spaniards, and have an outlook that is international.
